The National Invasive Species Act of 1996 amends the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act of 1990 to mandate ballast water management regulations to prevent the introduction and spread of aquatic nuisance species into U.S. waters. It also established a national ballast water data clearinghouse, directed regional studies, and encouraged state, tribal, and international coordination via the Task Force to improve prevention and management efforts.
