On Saturday, August 23, 2025, Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge welcomed new and returning hunters for a hands-on Waterfowl Hunting Workshop, hosted in partnership with and the .

The free workshop focused on waterfowl hunting and was designed to support new or inexperienced hunters, as well as those looking to return to the sport. Participants engaged in a full day of learning, with a mix of classroom instruction and field demonstrations.

Topics included waterfowl identification, hunting techniques, and gear essentials. Attendees were encouraged to bring their own calls and equipment鈥攖hough firearms were not permitted. 鈥淓vents like this create a space where new hunters can ask questions, learn from experienced mentors, and build the confidence they need to get out in the field. It鈥檚 also a great way to build a sense of community and remind everyone that hunting and conservation go hand in hand,鈥 said USFWS employee Matt Falteich.

Lunch was generously provided by Ducks Unlimited, and the event fostered a welcoming environment for building confidence and community among hunters preparing for the upcoming season.

Workshops like this one are a great example of how partnerships can support conservation-minded recreation and help connect people with nature.
