About Us
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984 when 340 acres were purchased from the West Indies Investment Company. The land was acquired specifically to protect nesting habitat of endangered leatherback sea turtles. An additional 43 acres have been acquired since then to conserve the Aklis pre-historic archaeological site and a stand of the endangered Vahl鈥檚 boxwood tree.
Our Mission
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge鈥檚 primary focus is the conservation of nesting habitat for the endangered leatherback sea turtles.
Other Facilities in this Complex
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which consists of nine unique refuges, including Sandy Point, Green Cay, and Buck Island NWRs located in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each refuge plays a vital role in conserving the Caribbean's distinctive endemic species and natural resources. Together, we work tirelessly to protect the rich biodiversity that makes the Caribbean truly special.
